Iced Mocha Recipe with Homemade Mocha Syrup

Iced Mocha Recipe served over ice with whipped cream and chocolate

This Iced Mocha Recipe blends chilled coffee, creamy milk, and homemade chocolate syrup into a smooth, refreshing café-style drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or cane sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup chilled, strongly brewed coffee or espresso; cold brew concentrate may also be used
  • 12 tablespoons prepared mocha syrup, adjusted to taste
  • Whipped cream and additional mocha syrup, for an optional topping

Instructions

  1. Place the cocoa or cacao powder, sugar, sea salt, and cold water in a small saucepan set over low heat.
  2. Whisk the mixture often until the sugar has melted and the chocolate syrup becomes glossy and even.
  3. Take the saucepan off the heat, blend in the vanilla extract, and allow the syrup to cool.
  4. Add the milk, chilled coffee or espresso, and mocha syrup to a large measuring glass or a tightly sealed jar.
  5. Whisk thoroughly, or shake the closed jar, until the mocha is evenly mixed and lightly foamy.
  6. Fill a serving glass with ice, pour in the mocha, and finish with whipped cream and extra syrup when desired.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, full-fat canned coconut milk and oat milk both provide a pleasantly creamy texture.
  • To use a liquid sweetener, replace 1 cup sugar with ¾ cup honey or ¾ cup maple syrup. Expect the syrup to carry some flavor from the chosen sweetener.
  • Keep the cooled mocha syrup covered in the refrigerator for one month or longer.
  • Freeze leftover coffee or espresso in an ice tray, then use the cubes to chill freshly brewed coffee without diluting it.
